The Trump administration continues to prove just how willing it is to sacrifice science-based public health programs for the sake of moral posturing. The administration has reportedly authorized a host of deep cuts to teen pregnancy prevention programs in more than 80 institutions around the country.
The programs, most of which are having their funding cut halfway through what were designed to be multiyear research projects, did not involve abortion counseling whatsoever. Regardless, opponents in the current Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Adolescent Health maintain that funding for teen pregnancy prevention is political, “pro-sex” and immoral. Current Head of the Department, Tom Price, has said that measures such as the Affordable Care Act’s contraception-coverage mandate equate to a “trampling on religious freedom and religious liberty in this country.”
Once again, low-income and communities of color, who statistically have higher rates of teen births and pregnancy, are being hit hardest by the funding cuts: many of the programs were geared toward pregnancy prevention among Native American and Latinx teenagers. One program was meant to provide pregnancy-prevention guidance to Texas youth in foster care.
Abstinence-only education, the favored solution of social conservatives such as Price, has been continually proven ineffective. But we’ve seen time and time again that research-based and proven measures such as accessible birth control hold little water with this administration.
