Storytelling, Sustainable Development and Gender

Reporters, editors and development leaders gathered at the UN this week for a panel on media strategies to foster sustainable development. Nosh Nalavala, Bureau Chief for MediaGlobal News, called on writers and editors to increase coverage of sustainable development, making issues of poverty, disease, hunger, and climate change a top priority, while Ambassador Guillermo Rishchynski of the Permanent Mission of Canada to the United Nations spoke about the upcoming post-2015 development agenda, and the critical importance of placing women at the center of development plans and goals.

This is the first article we’ve seen connecting media professionals and communication strategies to the sustainable development conversation, and it’s long overdue. The stories of women’s lives, in particular, are a key vehicle for mobilizing support for and engagement with truly sustainable development. Here at Women at the Center, we’re always on the lookout for more of these stories and we welcome your thoughts!
